About Paul Haughney

Paul Haughney is the founder and editor of The Right Golf Ball, an independent website specialising in golf-ball fitting, reviews, comparisons and recommendations.
He created The Right Golf Ball to help golfers understand an equipment category that is frequently reduced to oversimplified rules.
Advice such as:
- “Slow swings must use low compression”
- “Fast swings always need a firm ball”
- “High handicappers should never use tour balls”
- “One model is best for everyone”
ignores the way launch, spin, trajectory, strike, feel and short-game technique interact.
Paul’s objective is to translate golf-ball construction and performance information into practical guidance golfers can use on the course.
Golf Background
Paul has played golf for 20 years and currently plays most of his golf at Gowran Park Golf Club, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. His current handicap is 6.9, and his own experience of trying to find the right golf ball for driver & irons helped create the idea for The Right Golf Ball.
I am an avid golfer, playing 3 to 4 times a week, and love trying out different golf balls, and lots of golf balls I test are unfortunately not brand new ones, but golf balls I find on the golf course. It’s amazing how many different Makes & Models we as golfers use and only after testing different golf balls have I found out that you really do need to play a golf ball to fully appreciate whether it’s right for your game, or not.
Role at The Right Golf Ball
As founder and editor, Paul is responsible for:
- Selecting editorial topics
- Researching current products
- Comparing manufacturer specifications
- Reviewing independent test data
- Structuring fitting and recommendation content
- Checking model-generation status
- Revising outdated articles
- Correcting identified errors
- Maintaining the site’s editorial standards
Research Approach
Paul uses sources that may include:
- Official manufacturer product pages
- Manufacturer technical documentation
- USGA and R&A equipment information
- Current conforming-ball lists
- Independent golf-ball testing
- Launch-monitor data published by reputable testers
- Specialist golf-equipment publications
- Direct product use when clearly identified
Manufacturer performance descriptions are treated as claims from the manufacturer—not automatically as independent proof.
Independent test results are attributed to the organisation that produced them. Results from one golfer, robot condition or launch-monitor session are not presented as universal outcomes for every player.
Testing and First-Hand Experience
The Right Golf Ball does not claim that Paul has personally launch-monitor tested every product discussed on the site.
When an article includes direct first-hand testing, the article should explain:
- Who performed the test
- Which model generation was used
- The approximate test conditions
- The clubs or equipment used
- What was observed or measured
- Any important limitations
When no direct testing has taken place, the article is based on clearly identified research and comparative analysis.

Editorial Principles
[YOUR FIRST NAME] believes golf-ball recommendations should be:
- Specific
- Evidence-led
- Current
- Honest about limitations
- Clear about who a product suits
- Clear about who should avoid it
- Free from rigid speed and handicap myths
- Updated when product generations change
A recommendation should explain why a ball may fit a particular golfer rather than simply awarding it a score.
Use of Technology and AI
The Right Golf Ball may use digital research tools and artificial intelligence to assist with tasks such as:
- Organising research
- Comparing specifications
- Developing article structures
- Identifying potential inconsistencies
- Improving clarity and presentation
Technology does not replace editorial responsibility.
Every published article is reviewed and approved by the human editor. Product status, technical claims and recommendations should be checked against reliable sources before publication.
AI-generated wording or analysis is not treated as a primary factual source.
